how to tell why chickens losing feathers on neck

my birds started losing feathers on their necks and i thought they were molting. now it's been a few weeks, the areas look red and they aren't losing any other feathers. there is no rooster, and these are not birds at the bottom of the pecking order. not every bird is losing feathers. my two white birds (leghorn and pr) seem to be fine.

get help and check them over under good light with a magnifying glass and look for parasites (lice, mites, etc..)
