How to tell??

I have a few new chickens, but a while ago i was watching Dirty Jobs or something like that and they were sexing chics(i think) and they were looking at the feathers.. i was wondering if anybody could explain to me what they were doing to tell?
Although i might have gotten confused on what they were doing..

It takes lots of training. Some chicks depending on the breed can be feather sexed. Other breeds are vent sexed.

I read on another post that if you open the wing and all the feathers are even on the bottom it is a male and uneven it is a female. But I'm not sure this is fool proof!

that`s feather sexing, and it only works on some breeds, but I don`t know which ones!

Broilers and commercial white leghorns are bred for feathersexing, other breeds are not.
