How to train your rooster?

He's run up on me, my wife, and one of my kids so far. Scratched my daughter. That was last week. Yesterday he tried it on me, when I was getting them scratch no less! ungrateful jerk. LOL.

Anyway, I was able to grab him and sit on him and hold him down until he submitted. I was able to then pick him up and carry him for a few feet before putting him down. He looked at me as if he were going to go for it again, but decided he would just have some of the seeds I just gave the girls. We have about 18 girls to one roo.

Well, today he thought he'd try and show me who is the bigger rooster again. He already knows I ma, and I'm not afraid of him, I just don't want him running up on me when I'm not watching him, or have him run up on one of my kids. Does that sit on them method really work, and if so how long (how many times) do I have to do it?

If it doesn't stop, I'll grow the flock the not so old fashioned way: Tractor Supply. ;-)

Personally, any rooster from my flock that attacks a kid is gone as soon as I can catch him.

IIRC, @Shadrach has advice on training roosters, but I myself wouldn't attempt it when kids are around to be frightened or injured.

Yeah, let this rooster go. They have a brain the size of a walnut, and once they are aggressive, very very limited prognosis. Some people will get them to be fine for them, but as soon has he sees a kid, he will figure his odds are in his favor.

There are good roosters, the longer I am in this, the more I believe it is the luck of the draw. I do think flock mate roosters are the worst odds, they just get bigger and there are no older birds to thump some manners into them.

I do think that roosters raised up in a multi-generational flock, tend to be better with both chickens and people...

BUT you can get rotten roosters no matter HOW YOU DO IT. It is a lot of the luck of the draw.

Go ahead and get rid of him. If you want a roo, then either hatch some chicks or buy some straight run.
