How to transport chickens?

What is the best option for transporting chickens. They are going to go to my sisters house so she can chicken sit while I am away for vacation. She just lives 30 miles from me.

We use a large dog kennel(s) to take our chickens to poultry shows. You can put some straw or shavings in the bottom so they dont slip around as much.

I've always used one of those plastic boxes that you can get at walmart with the snap on lid. Just drill a few holes in the top and add a few newspapers to the bottom. Two or three can fit in one pretty snug. It's inexpensive and useful to have incase you need to take a few to the vet or anything like that later. But I guess that depends on how many you have.

Okay. I don’t have kennel and wanted to stay pretty cheap since I won’t have a need for it later. I thought about getting a large cardboard box and poking holes in it. I have 6 chickens and two ducks.

That sounds like it would work just as well!

Cardboard boxes will work. I made special cages to transport my birds to the shows.

Boxes are fine. I know of one BYC member who took some boxes, cut a hole in the side, and zip tied some hardware cloth over the opening to improve visibility. I think she was taking them to a "swap".
