I just discovered that I have mites in my coop and am not sure how to treat the chickens and coop in the winter. I live in MN and the temps are below freezing now and will remain so for a while. I have used Elector PSP in the past on the chickens and throughout the coop with great success but am unsure if it can be used now since it is so cold out. I have read a few posts suggesting to move the chickens into a garage or basement to apply the PSP and to keep them there until they are dry, but I do not have that option. I also have 13 chickens, not just a few.

I use the deep bedding/litter method and cleaned out the coop a month ago in preparation for winter. There was no sign of mites at that time. As you all know, mites are no fun at all! Any suggestions on winter treatment would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Consider finding a permethrin based powder sometimes called poultry dust.

Treating after dark, using a flashlight or head lamp.. is often a good way to prevent any chasing.
