How to value hens for restitution (UPDATED in post #12)

Just looked on Utah craigslist and found several ads selling hens for between 8 and 12 dollars. The $8 became $7. if you bought all 8 hens- a military reassignment forced sale.
Looks like you can replace your birds for a reasonable price - but add in the cost of gas to go get them. Shipping adult hens is costly and risky. Not like babies where they have a built in time where they absorb egg sack during shipping.

Just wanted to say that the dog owner has been very good to work with. They have been very apologetic and we came to an agreement and restitution has been made. Not all dog owners are hard to work with.
