How to we stop chickens from flying

you can use a good sharp pair of scissors, and you want to cut all the primary flight feathers which are the BIG ones along the edge when you spread their wing. Just look at the shank of the feather and if you see pink, or blood flowing, skip that feather.
 
My girls never fly very high. Maybe a foot or so even when they are free ranging. My run has a roof to keep them dry and so that nothing can get in or out.
Just a suggestion about the roof. I don't like clipping their wings unless it become absolutely necessary.
 
my run is about 40 feet long by about 20 feet wide, its bigger then my coop so putting a roof on it is not an option

one of my EE "babies" (hatched june 09) flew over 7 feet high to the roof of my coop to evade capture this afternoon

i didnt want to clip their wings either but its just not safe for them if they will not return to the coop because they found a tree to sleep in, and I have also "grounded" them...no more free ranging till they learn not to escape over the top
