How Truly Safe Are Heat Lamps Outside?

I'm thinking about putting a red 250 watt heat lamp outside to shine in on the ducks shelter to give them warmth outside, but I'm really reluctant to do so since it's so close to the house. It's away from any wet or snow but still unsure as to rather I want to do this or not.

You will want it covered so it cannot get wet. That may cause it to shatter.

We keep ours in our coop and it is fine. Try to buy the shatter proof ones if you can. They still may shatter sometimes, but usually they are pretty good.

As long as it is not touching anything that it can burn, you should be fine. Make sure it is secured well so it cannot fall and cause a problem.

I've had a heat lamp outside since november in a small shelter and I think it will be fine as long as its protected from moisture

Yeah protect from moisture, Make sure its in a sturdy place where the ducks CANT knock it down, Heat lamps are known for fires ( I wired mine to the coop wall to make sure no matter what the chickens couldent knock it down

)

Not a fan of them at all. They are way to risky. I prefer the good ole oil filled radiator. Wont work outside, but inside of a shelter. You really don't need it unless it goes well below 20. Ducks can handle up to -20 with wind protection. They produce a lot of heat themselves and the downs are excellent insulators. Buck creek chickens has a good suggestion.

They are right under my deck away from most wind, some gets in there of course but where they have their shelter/nest they barely get the wind at all, all the ducklings are hunkering down in there, they won't even attempt to go outside on the snow in the sun. While momma(Special needs girl & her mate) sit on the hay in the cold, but they have a shelter as well to go into, I've put them in that shelter with a fleece blanket covering it even though wind really doesn't get int there either. I'm living an learning as I go along, that is why I'm so thankful for this board!
