You gave good advice but I think I messed up somewhere, maybe you can tell me where. I bought a new 10 gallon aquarium with a strong metal screen lid. Washed it thoroughly and dried it. Put in 4 lbs of organic wheat bran. Added sliced organic potatoes and carrots. Added Uncle Jim's Worm Farm 1000 Count Mealworms (there were not 1000, maybe 100). The worms were active and looked healthy when I put them in. I fed a few to the chickens and they slurped them right up.You're welcome! If you've got more, tag me again.
Is there a chance that they couldn't breathe in there? You gave good advice but I think I messed up somewhere, maybe you can tell me where. I set the aquarium up outdoors underneath our coop which is about 3' off the ground. The aquarium is on bricks in a small tub of water to keep the ants out. The coop provides shade plus there's a tarp over the entire coop area. The chickens don't have access to the space under the coop.
The mealworms died within 24 hours. They turned black and look flat and desiccated. What did I do wrong? Is it too dry here for them? It's 95F and 12% humidity today.
I just use the plain dirt that's already on the ground.Good Sunday morning everyone, seems like it’s been forever since I've been around here. We moved to a new house in November a little further south towards phoenix, were right near the western ranchman, what-a great store. Getting 15 chicks delivered this upcoming week from cackle, so excited, we wanted some cream legbars and barred rocks and more cinnamon queens…. The coop i built has been working great, currently have mulch and dirt for the coop/run but I want to switch over to sand, does anyone here know of sand will get too hot in the summer?
Love the coop and yard! We just use the regular desert dirt that's already in our yard. All of the runs are covered so it's shaded during summer. The chickens seem to do fine on it. We make sure they have ice water foot baths if they want to cool off in those.Good Sunday morning everyone, seems like it’s been forever since I've been around here.
