How/Where do ducks like to lay eggs?

We had a nesting box in our duck house, but the girls never used it. We have a dirt floor and the girls prefer to dig a nest. Sometimes they share a nest. Usually we will find 2-3 nests for 8 girls. Then they get bored, fill in a nest and make a new one. Sometimes we will find a stray egg in the run. Guess it depends on their mood.

if they are of laying age then i would look every day. i get an egg a day from every laying hen. they stop for a mth or less in the winter and for a mth or so when molting. other then that it's clock work.

if they are not laying yet they should start around 20 pluse weeks or next spring

I thought they laid their eggs during the night or early morning. I confine mine to their duck houses before I go to bed & when I get up in the morning I let them out & collect the eggs they leave there. They spend the rest of their day in the yard & the only time they've laid eggs elsewhere is when they've gone broody & made a nest for themselves in another part of the yard.

Right now my only laying ducks are the Khaki Camplells, but I have 2 Pekins who are 16 weeks old now. When might they begin to lay? Will they have the same convenient laying habits as the Khakis?
