HOW WIDE SHOULD THE ROOST BE?

so I don't mean to be stupid but by saying the 2x4 up you mean the flat side that is 4 inches wide needs to be was they actually sitting on? I have 10 2 & a half month old chickens that are currently roosting on a pole that is only an inch wide I'm assuming that is totally inadequate

~ Forgive me that I truly do not remember where I seen this, I have been on SO Many site the past few days. Last night I was reading a site where a woman had a barn burn down and lost MANY animals to the fire She had ONE Single hen survive, she was in the house recovering from a *Frost Bite* to her foot. She was spared from the fire, but she lost her foot up to the joint... There was a pic, and in the pic was a One Legged hen...(lol).
