HOW'D YA GET THAT NAME

lau.gif

For years now I have wondered how people come up with the names they give to there Chickens. So here is a place you can tell others how your chicken got it's name.
I live on a four acre small horse ranch, been here all of 10 years now and have always been a country gal. When I was young I had chickens for my 4H club and once for FFA. I raised white leghorns and won 3rd place with my hens. That was many years ago, now I have decided to have some chickens around the barn, free range style. So for Easter my husband bought me some peeps, not the sugar kind. We have 9 peeps

and choose to have a variety of breeds.

Now comes the hard part, what to name them. There is always that first look, the obvious name. Cotton and Pearl after one of my Aunts. Well you guessed it Silky's, we have two and all white. Hen or rooster we don't really know. Now I have been told that you don't name things until after a person is gone, so I think I'm safe. So the aunt naming went on to include Elsie the Barbed Rock.
I have two Sex links named, Henny Penny from the memoirs of a child's story.
Peggy was named after my husbands Mother. Pete is a Bantam Rooster "we think" who was named after asking friends on the Internet to lend a naming hand.
Next comes Easter, gifted at Easter so there must be one named Easter. His breed is unknown to us and will be a very big I believe rooster. Poor thing was chosen from what is called the Pan Fried Bin. Mary is a white leghorn hen, named after my Mom. A little red bantam named yes you guessed it, Little Red.
So that's how my Peeps

came to have there names. I would enjoy reading, How'd ya get that Name for your chickens, as names reflect were we come from, have been, and what we see.

I am enjoying my new charges and look forward to the years to come.

UP date:

I only have 8 chickens now 4hens and 4 Roosters, Two of the Roosters will need new homes, GOOD HOMES and NOT to be eaten. You get the picture.
I'm in hopes of adopting 3 or 4 more pullets this fall so there will be new names to be thinking of and I have some in mind. I have had some grate response's on Chicken Maintenance's over 500 hits so I thought Id give this site a try. If your looking for a name or want to leave one or two please feel free to do so. I love reading the stories and names, some make me laugh out loud. I'll keep up dating this site from time to time. So come back again and again.

When I name my animals I tend to be a little more silly but I've never really purposely gave my chickens names they always just came to me randomly. I had a tendancy of nameing my chickens after food (cruel I know) even though they weren't actually going to be eaten. I've had a easter egger named six piece wich was short for "six piece combo meal", I've had a buff orpington named nugget who was my favorite chicken ever! I've also had some nicer names like chatty cathy, who got this name because she would follow me around and constantly "talk" to me lol and one chicken who was near and dear to my heart was "silkie friend" Yes he was a silkie (clever right? lol) my husband asked me one day "why do you keep calling him silkie friend?" and I said "Duh! He's a silkie and he's my friend!"

I guess mine weren't always so nice and meaningful but I'm more of a silly person so I guess the silly names reflect how I am. I also always enjoy hearing names people have named their chickens and how they came up with them. Hopefully we get some good ones

My kids name the chickens then I go and rename them if I can't remember which one is which. I usually name them after something they do or by markings. The two buffs I got last year one is named Noisy because she is. There are days that I think I have a peacock in my back yard. The other buff is named OB (Other Buff). Of the 4 EE's I got last year, I only managed to name one. It's the only one I can tell from the other three. She liked to escape all the time so I named her Rocket after the chicken in the movie Chicken Run. I named the first rooster Runt because he started looking like he'd be the runt of the litter. He wasn't. He went to freezer camp. Our current rooster is named Stew. Also destined for freezer camp. We have 3 barred rocks this year and two new buffs. I think my kids have named them, but I don't know which one is which.

we have 4 chicks that we just picked up today. 3 are white leghorns and one is a buff orpington. the buff is named oddball because he is the only one of his kind. we one white is named sleepy because she sleeps all the time. another is named noodle (it started as a cruel joke that when the chickens get older they will be dinner when they stop laying, chicken noodle seemed appropriate) the last does not have a name yet we are waiting to see how they act and get their personalities

Well, ,I had a black japaneese named Jasmin. We rescued her on Halloween two years ago with Carmen [BLB Dutch] and Houdinni [Splash dutch]. Since it was Halloween, MJ's Thriller came on. Jasmin started oddly dancing. No, not just moving her head with the car. DANCING. Clucking, moving her feet... all of it! (Even when it howled she opened her mouth...) It was really weird yet cute. So her name became Jasmin "Thriller".

OH and here's a pic
