Why hello everyone! Tis been many months since my last update and for that I apologize. I'm still very grateful for the few loyal peeps that reply to this thread every so often, so thank you so much! And if you happen to be a newbie to Talkin's Flock Thread, feel free to leave a post!
A lot has happened since my last update. I added new perches in the run, and we got new chicks.
This is my perch situation. They've been up for many months but still, only about 4 of them use it lol!
As for my chicks that we got in about late May, they are around 3 weeks old. We got a silver-laced wyandotte chick named Dan, an ISA brown chick named Mabel, and a brown leghorn chick named Myrtle.
I am disapointed so far- day 1 when we brought the chicks home, I knew Myrtle was a little sus (likely a cockerel.) First of all, he is 2x bigger than Mabel and Dan, including his feet. He makes a warning call whenever he sees or hears something. And, Myrtle tidbits. I'm not saying that a pullet can't take over the rooster role and do all these things. But all of those signs added up = probable rooster
As for the other two, Mabel is 1000% a girl (ISA browns are sexlinks). She is the sweetest thing ever. Dan is friskier. She fights with Myrtle sometimes and her comb is starting to turn red. But I'm not making any assumptions yet with Dan, the last thing I want is to have to get rid of two cockerels and be left with one lonely pullet. However, Dan's early feather growth is promising. Some may say that feather growth is not an accurate sexing method, but every time I use it it proves to be correct so I just keep doin' it.
At some point I will be making a super easy DIY BSL larvae bin- not with all those crazy PVC pipes and other doodads on there, but rather a more simplified version of that. So stay tuned! And if you are reading this right now, thank you so much!
