For now, I'm "Buckeyechick". I live in central Ohio, and I will be learning from this community for the next several months, I hope...

I am the former owner of a Barred Rock (sex link) rooster named Cogburn, a White Leghorn hen named "Banty", and a red mix named "Rhoda".

(Yeah, I know my names were not all that unique... LOL)

I will be researching enclosure types and breeds for the next few months, in preparation for adding some hens to our backyard for the purpose of egg production for our family.

Thanks!

Hello there! I'm from Ohio too....Strasburg is near the Dover, New Philadelphia area, if you're familiar with that at all. Welcome! A great place to buy chicks would be from the Meyer Hatchery in Polk Ohio.....you can get a free catalog from their website, and it's great because they have pictures and descriptions....very helpful. I drive there and pick up my chicks, because I usually place small orders.

Anyhow, I would like to suggest the Golden Buff hybrid because I have two, and those gals lay a nice big brown egg nearly every day without missing a beat! I also really enjoy my speckled sussex.....she's just a baby, so I don't know about the egg production yet...but she's very loveable. I also LOVE my Ameraucana (well Easter Eggers). They are beautiful chickens and they also lay a medium sized green egg nearly every day. Wonderful birds!

Well, good luck with your future chickens!

Sharon
