Just wanted to introduce myself to all. I'm in charleston, SC and just started building my coop today. That got off to a rough start as I stepped on a copperhead...luckily he was either groggy or I stepped on his head while he was sleeping as he didn't strike! Whew! Of course by the time I took a picture, ran to my truck and grabbed my pistol he was gone. ( yes I was going to shoot his non rent payin, baby chick waitin, heart attack creatin butt! If that offends anyone, please feel free to come down, find him, and take him with you

)

Anyway, I plan to get a small flock going for eggs and if I can bring myself to slaughter them, meat too. In my usual overboard straight out the gate fashion, I am going to get some Japanese quail going too.

I have spent a few weeks reading this forum, and WOW, what a vault of info. Thanks so much.

Glad that snake was asleep/groggy. How many chickens are you planning on getting? Any breeds you have decided on? We are looking into meat chickens as well, but don't know if I can bring myself to butcher. Glad you joined us

Allabout...I'm thinking 25 to start. As far as breeds, well that is an ongoing debate. I do plan to breed them and I have a few questions which I hopefully can get answered on this forum in the next week or so. That google thinks it's soooo smart, but it can't seem to answer the questions I have! As it stands right now, I am thinking rhode island reds. Seem to be good dual purpose breed...again if I can not get attached to them and do my part of the dual purpose! I would prefer to go with red (or black) sex links, just need to do some more research on the breeding side there.

So I am trying to decide whether to go with all RIR's, mix of RIR's and barred rocks, or sex links. From what I can tell reading here, inbreeding is not a huge concern. However, I am not clear on what happens say 2nd generation sex links. I know they lose the day 1 sex ID trait, but not sure of everything else....like deformities, etc. Unless it was like 8 wings or something, I'd be cool with that. Lol j/k
Then I don't know whether to try to getbseveral breeds and keep them separate. Lots of things I need to research and decide...quickly!

Y'all make any decisions on breeds? Single or multiple breeds?

I'd be keeping my work boots on! I had this problem when I started raising poultry for meat, they'd somehow acquire names which didn't make them sound good to have over for dinner. Who would want to eat henpeck, cutgrass, or bubbles, right? However, one year I ordered some cornish cross fryers and they were big, sloppy, and kind of mean, which made it pretty easy to have some fresh chicken dinners.

Yeah we got some big rattlers around here too. And cottonmouths...aka water moccasins.

Copperheads are pretty poisonous too...check out this site. All kinds of info on em, and a picture of a dudes arm that got bit on the finger!

So maybe to make slaughter easier I should name them like chicken Parmesan or chicken nuggets or chicken fried.
