Hey everybody! I'm new to here and having chickens. I'm looking forward to learning a lot here from all of you. We just got 3 Cochins about a week ago. We got a White, Brown, and Black and White ones. I'm sure that these aren't the right names for them, but it just goes to show I'm going to learn a lot.

The white is mine. Her name is Winter.
The black is my wifes. Her name is Gertrude.
And last but not least is the brown one. She is my son's, and her name is "Moma Bird"

We are guessing they are all about 3 weeks old.

When we got them they were in a bin marked "pullet." What does pullet mean? Is that a different breed of cochins?

We are hoping to just keep them as egg layers, and a sort of pet. They girl at the store said these would be good layers, and they are very friendly. I've read they only lay 2 eggs a week is that true?

I have a bunch of questions, but I think that I will wait to post them later.

Oh, and I can answer one for ya- 'pullets' means girl chickens- not roosters.

I live in Snohomish Wa.
Were practically neighbors.
I believe that Cochins will lay more than two eggs a week.
During there first two years of there laying cycle you should be getting atleast 5 per bird a weed if not more.
There are the perfect weeks ya' know. That would be 21 egg a week at peak season.

Check out the Washingtonian thread for alot more of us locals.
Click on Index @ the top, scroll down to Where am I, Where are you?

from Norther California!! Glad you found us!

Pullet is the name of a young hen.. prior to laying age. Any breed of chicken is a pullet as a young female.

Love the pics! Cochins arn't the most prolific of layers... Mine pale in comparison to the other breeds I have. I got mine, because I think they're really pretty birds. Good Luck!
