I've been a member for a while but only now getting the courage to say howdy. Have a backyard flock that is down to only two silkies after a raccoon strike. :( Looking to get some more chicks soon.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I'm sorry about your losses to the raccoon. It's always sad to lose some of our flock. My wife and I were both raised in the great state of Texas, not too far from where you are (Blue Ridge for her, Greenville for me). I have relatives who live in the Weatherford area. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting some more chicks.

I think the internet is made for shy people. I know I have bloomed since figuring out the basics of computer communication. Before I joined I lurked for about 8 mos.trying to get up the nerve to do so. I also worried that there was a "catch" to joining such a big organization. There is "no catch," Just a huge, great group of like minded people, from all walks of life, who enjoy chickens, chatting and sharing information. Welcome to Backyard chickens, so glad you joined the flock

Sorry to hear about your losses, that's always tough. In case you haven't already seen it, here's some good information about predators and how to protect your birds:

Are you getting more silkies or are you going to try a different breed with your new chicks?

BYC has a lot of valuable information available and very helpful people. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

So glad you did decide to join us. So sorry about your losses.

Be sure to take NorthFlChick's advise and review protection from predators. Good luck with the new additions to your flock.
