I was so excited when I found this site the other day while doing research on chicken breeds. This seems like a wonderful community and I look forward to becoming a part of it.

My family had 3 Barred Rocks when I was growing up and I recently moved onto some land in the country and will be able to raise chickens of my own!

I am getting Barred Rocks and Black Australorps. I would also like to get some Buff Orpingtons if the local feed will be getting some as well. I live in the mountains of Northern Colorado, but from what I've read these breeds can handle cold winters.

Should I get more Australorps or more Barred Rocks? Or half and half?

Thanks in advance for your input! And Happy Easter!

Hi from WV, I'm new to the site also, lots of info here! As far as which chickens to get.....I don't know. I would go with Barred Rocks if you don't have any, but that's just me. I am waiting on my babies to get here, Columbian and Blue Laced Red Wyandottes.

! Great to have you with us! In my opinion you can't go wrong with any of the breeds you mentioned - in any combination. As sourland stated, mixed flocks are great. Best of luck to you!
