Hi folks. My wife and I recently acquired a home with a few acres and I've been dying to get some chickens. Well this weekend, the day comes. I'm hoping for 4-6 hens, so we're going to pick up 10 straight run chicks - 5 Easter Eggers and 5 Buff Orpingtons. We're in the country so roosters aren't a problem, though eventually we'll thin it down to just 1 rooster if we start out with more than that.

We have a 2 year old (turns 3 next month) so based on my research I think I have picked pretty docile breeds, and my little girl will be super excited to help get eggs every day (especially if we get lucky enough to get some pretty blue and/or green eggs).

We've got an 8' x 12' garden shed I'm converting to a coop, and tons of room in the yard for an enclosed run as well as some occasional free ranging.

I've got lots of questions and it looks like there are plenty around here to help. See ya around.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. I've raised Buff Orpingtons for years (still have some in my flock) and they are a wonderful breed; cold hardy, calm and gentle, and good layers of large, brown eggs. Our Easter Eggers are my granddaughter's (pictured in my avatar) favorites. She loves their colored eggs. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your flock this weekend.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

It sounds like you have a lovely flock! Buff orpingtons are my favorite breed! I love everything about them. I also am raising an easter egger whom I really enjoy as well. Both are wonderful breeds and I hope you are enjoying raising them! Feel free to ask any questions you may have. Welcome to our flock!

Glad you joined the BYC flock. Rule of thumb is 4-5 sq.feet per bird inside the coop excluding nest boxes and roosts. and 10 sq.feet per bird in the outdoor run.

Have you visited the Learning Center, it's a great place to start. Also the coop sections for ideas - people have even converted Little Tykes playhouses, etc. and the predator section to help with security.
