I am new to having chickens and have 11 chicks. My uncle (God rest his soul) raised chickens and turkeys in his backyard most of my life. Having the good fortune of living close by, I was a frequent visitor

I am now 40yrs young and had a stroke on 03/13/12. I am lucky to be alive. I decided this would be good "therapy" for me. I am not yet able to drive but I can piddle around at home and have my strapping 16 year old son

Having said all that, I am in the process of constructing my first chicken coop

(Dear friends pray for this to go well!! LOL I so badly want a chicken tractor!!) and I am having trouble sexing my chicks.

Which of course leads to trouble deciding how many nest boxes to build.

I have a few pictures loaded in my album of my flock.

I ordered 4 barred rocks and 5 golden comets...the girl said they were a straight run? Not exactly sure, but I think that means you get what you get boys and girls all mixed.... I haven't taken any pictures of the 2 new chicks (that makes my flock a total of 11) but if I can figure out the sex of one or two I can take it from there.

The breed is kinda strange looking too. I am not sure if all of these are barred rocks or golden comets HELP PLEASE!!

. Some feathers are black/brown on the barred rocks and some are black/white. My 70yr old aunt says the black and white are are "dominiker" chickens (I spelled that wrong...and on purpose because she is like WAY southern!!)

*(side note about my stroke damage was to the left hemisphere so speech and language are affected. I am much slower and have problems with short term memory. Stroke on the left brain = damage to the right side of your body. Right side brain = left side body.)

Hello and welcome from Ohio....so glad you joined us. Best of luck with your new chicks and your recovery. Chickens will definitely speed it up. They are the best !!!

Good to see you getting involved after such a catastrophic life event! Dang! A stroke at 40! Makes me appreciate the health I have.
