Hello all,
I've been aware of BYC for about 5 years but I never made the commitment to join. I don't get online that much for a variety of reasons, but if I'm going to get online it's going to be with others who share my love for these wonderful creatures God has made. My dad brought chickens into my life when I was in jr. high school and I have loved them from that time on. After 17 years of marriage, we decided to get some chickens; we made a nice coop and run and purchased 25 chicks.
We've added and lost chickens since then and when we moved two years ago to our current location we decided to double our flock. We now have over 50 chickens, primarily pullets at this time. The pullets are in my two car garage waiting to join the others once they reach 10 weeks. Our older flock is currently runnin' free and just enjoying life. Yesterday, I finished my plans to partition off a part of my barn into a 30 x 20 coop and then add a 30 x 20 run. We'll then place all of them in their new home. Our oldest hens are over five years old and just recently we decided that four of them were heading to the crock pot. We primarily raise our chickens just because we love them and getting quality eggs is an added benefit. I have a regular group of people at work who are always asking me for eggs.
We love our chickens for a myriad of reasons, but mainly for the lessons they have taught and continue to teach us and our children. When the Lord blesses me with grandchildren, I hope they too will share in our love for these beautiful creatures.
I've had a lot of experience with chickens (made many mistakes and done a few things right,..I hope
), but need to learn a lot more. I look forward to reading the messages in the forums and if I can provide any help, I'll be glad to assist.
Gotta run and get started reading!
CJ
