So the wife and I built a coop and have seven mixed hens. We want to add five more, but looking now for a good layers, but would be good for show too for our boys for 4H. Silver Leghorns are looking good and so are the Russian Orlofts any thoughts? We live in town, but have a nice big backyard. We do have eagles and Hawks around.

Right now we already have 3 Americonas 1 Cornish hen 1 Jersey Giant and 2 Red stars. The coop is capable of holding 36 hens, but we only want 12 total.

Also wondering about good breeders/hatcheries that will deal with small orders

Thanks

If you want show stock of any breed, you aren't going to find it at a hatchery. Best to buy from a show breeder who has been raising good birds for awhile and really knows their stuff.

Some breeders like to put out their birds with 4Hers

I agree with the above. I am not familiar with Russian Orloffs, but I know Leghorns are fantastic layers. They do tend to be a bit skittish though. Not the friendliest breed either.

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan

For children it is best to start with more docile breeds, and you might also want to look for something a little less unusual than a silver Leghorn, as they are probably going to be much harder to find. Cochins are always great show birds for kids. You may want to google the Henderson chicken chart for information on breed behaviors.

Welcome to BYC from a fellow Montanan! I'm in Livingston, how 'bout you? Orloffs are awesome and so are Leghorns of any color :)
