We're in the middle of the pineywoods not far out of Texarkana.

We have raised Barred Rocks off and on for 35 years, and we're now branching out to try some Rhode Island Reds.

When we moved here and decided to get some chicks, my wife went to the feed store to look at some. She told the clerk she wanted a dozen chickens. The clerk asked if she wanted straight run or all pullets. Not knowing anything about chickens, my wife said, "Don't they have to be exposed to a rooster to lay eggs?". That brought the house down. Everybody in the store laughed out loud. We got straight run and had nearly half roosters. They were delicious.

We soon discovered that baby chicks make good tornado warnings. We had them in a box in the kitchen, and one rainy night they went absolutely berserk. Bounced off the walls of the box and screamed like they were being chased by demons. We had no idea what was going on until the next day when we found out a tornado had hit the town just a few miles from us and that it had passed just about over us.

I'm looking forward to learning more here on the forum. Lots of good info here from what I've seen so far.

Hello and welcome to BYC!

It always amazes me that we as humans laugh at someone who isn't up to par on certain things! It's just a shame that we just can't educate without making someone feel bad, so I apologize for that.

I have a couple BR and RIR and my BR seem to be a little friendlier but I love them all anyway. Do you have any tips on BR? Would love to know a few things!

Have you been to our learning center yet? They have some great articles to read, here is the link to it, https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center.

Good luck and feel free to ask questions! There are some great peeps who will and can answer just about anything for you!

Welcome to BYC!

Funny story about needing roosters for hens to lay eggs....LOL...this is a pretty common idea among a lot of people. But we were all new once. Amazing about the chicks panicking when a tornado touched down nearby!! I know that wild birds are very tuned into such things, but I was never sure about chickens. How interesting and thank you for sharing that!!

Make yourself at home here on BYC and enjoy all your poultry adventures!!

No need for you to apologize unless you were in the store and laughing your head off 35 years ago! My wife later went to work in that feed store, and she found her own things to laugh at. She learned all about "bob war" and "pop gates" among others. 8 years later I shut down that store and put my wife out of work. (I was a deputy sheriff and had a court order to seize and sell the store contents.)

We've always enjoyed the BR, as they seem gentle and easy-going (except one rooster). Our first flock became pets. I'd sit in their pen, and they'd perch on my shoulders and talk to me. The poop stains down the back of my shirts finally stopped that.

Howdy right back at 'cha from behind the Pine Curtain east of Nacogdoches!

We passes through your lovely area recently coming and going (twice) to Little Rock, our first time in the area.

Enjoy your chickens and the online chicken world.

Thanks! I made that shot from my radio-controlled airplane. I was standing in the yard at the house (white spot in the middle of the photo), and the plane was at my visual limit, so I turned it back toward home and snapped a couple of shots on the way.

Welcome to BYC! My wife and I were raised in northeast Texas. We have had both Barred Rocks and Rhode Island Reds and they are both very hardy chickens. Our RIRs were a little better layers than our BRs, but we like the personalities of the BRs better. Occassionally, one of our RIRs was aggresive (more so than with the BRs). Good luck with your flock.
