It’s been about 8 years since I’ve had backyard chickens. Unfortunately, my ladies (4 of them) were taken out by a nasty raccoon. I loved those little ladies. I decided to wait on getting new chicks due to a crumbling foundation issue with our house. Fast forward to today and the house and yard are ready to welcome a new flock. I’m ready too!! I’m so excited to start up again! We are in the process of figuring out a new coop and run layout which brought me here today. I won’t have the 8 chicks until April 1st but want to get everything all set go. Looking forward to swapping ideas and experiences 🐣🐓

Hello! Nice to meet you. I’m so sorry about your losses. It’s heartbreaking because they really are sweetheart birds.

Welcome to BYC!!:celebrate
I am so sorry about your girls. I was heartbroken when I lost my Polish, Bubbles, to a racoon the year before last. I can't imagine loosing all of my babies at once. I bet you are so excited about your new flock! I would love it you shared pictures when your little fluffballs arrive!!

It's a little like getting a nursery ready. :jumpy You have come to the right place for both ideas and experiences. I have a coop from Tractor Supply, which is adorable. However, the number of chickens they say it holds is about double what I am comfortable with. My feathered girls agree with me on this. We added a 10 x 10 run, and the 6 I have get to forage several hours per day. The best decision I made was to add interesting fallen branches for interest and broomstick handles through the bars on the coop for perching. They hop up and inch over for a pet every time I come over for a visit.
