Just wanted to say hi and introduce myself to the community. I have been learning a lot from this forum over the past few weeks since my wife and I decided that we want to start raising some chickens this spring. We live on two acres in a pretty quiet community in SW OH. Our zoning allows us to raise poulty and livestock but we're going stick with chickens for now. We're interested in both layers and broilers and we're hoping to get our first batch of chicks in month or so. Hopefully by the time the chicks will be ready to move to the coop I'll have it finished and all of the snow and cold weather will be done. Neither of us have ever raised chickens before and I've learned that there is a bit more to it than I originally thought. Any suggestions for a first timer looking for both layers and meat birds would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Looking forward to getting to know you guys!

from a cold and snowy fellow Buckeye. So glad you joined. You will love having chickens. My suggestion is to not raise your layers with meat birds. Raising meat birds is a little different. They go from day olds to ready to butcher in 8-10 weeks. All they do is eat and poop. The larger they get the less the move around and can get quite smelly but there is nothing better than fresh chicken. Good Luck.

Welcome to BYC! I started with chickens over the summer and the people of BYC have been great. Please visit my BYC Page for my blog links that you may find informative or amusing.

Starting with chickens is a little like drinking from a firehose....
