Hi everyone!

We just found out that our little town finally allows us to have small coops (6-10 chickens). We’ve been pushing for this for a couple years.

Anyhow, I researched a lot about BYCs back when we first moved here assuming an ag town would allow it before discovering otherwise. I kind of feel like I’m starting back at square one.

We are wanting to be able to have a little more self-sufficiency in these crazy times. I’ve had a large, healthy garden (more than we need) the past three years after a failed attempt some years before (coincidentally started in 2020 before COVID was a thing).

Anyhow, I’m hoping to be able to build a healthy and happy brood of chickens for both eggs and meat and am always wanting good information.

Breed wise I’m thinking something that is cold hardy and a decent hybrid- Buckeye maybe? My 5 y.o. daughter will be helping raise them- it’s a good way to learn responsibility- so temperament will be important.

I will be building the coop myself. I’m a professional carpenter so I’m hoping I can find some excellent plans that will allow me to build a predator proof coop better than the same money would buy one. We have mainly coyotes and some fox around here. Seen a coon or two as well. I’d rather go overboard on protecting them. I prefer over engineering something than making it “good enough” and regretting it later. Same philosophy as when I build a structure for my clients- build better than others for a price that is fair.

Anyhow, that’s my real quick intro and any advice is appreciated! Thanks everyone!

Hello, if you haven't already found it yet, under the Articles tab is a whole slew of coops built by members (some have plans, most of photos)...you can get a lot of helpful ideas there: chicken-coops.12

And if you have questions about your coop, you can post them here on this forum: Coop & Run - Design, Construction, & Maintenance

Best wishes!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

So glad you decided to join us. Buckeyes are a beautiful hardy breed to keep! Most of the standard breeds are pretty weather hardy for heat and cold however, so which ever breed you choose will probably do well in your territory.

Make yourself at home here and welcome to our community!
