Hiya, confused new member here. It's a good confusion though.

A coworker with a small flock is getting me started, he was kind enough to do the heavy lifting and agreed to build me a tractor. God blessed me with 10 thumbs, and he's built one before as well as a coop, so it should turn out well. It should be finished close to mid-month (May 2014) and after getting the necessary feeders, feed, waterer, etc., I'll tend to getting me some workin' wimmen.

Therein lies the confusion. Every time I decide on what breed is best for my situation, I find another breed that seems even better. This continues until I find myself back where I started. There are kiddies in the household that will help tend the flock, so I figured on selecting a breed that is generally easy-going, and doesn't mind being handled. Eggs are nice, and more eggs are nicer. Weather here is moderate to hot, no really cold winters ('ceptin' that global warming bone-chillin' winter of '14) so temperament and volume production are the main considerations.

Started out with leghorn, but learned they are skittish. Since then, I've gone the round robin of Black Sexlink, Australorp, Buff Orphington, Rhode Island Red, Plymouth Rock, and now, I find BYC, and add still more to the possibilities, like Star, for instance. And who says you can't have one of each? I'd rather keep things simple, and figure that's best accomplished by having all the same breed seein' how this is all new.

I'm not looking for anyone to straighten me out, I figure birds are like guns, cars, and everything else where folks have their favorites and think theirs best.

I may ultimately look at it from a different angle and go with whatever I find meets my other criteria. It may be idealistic, but would like to find a seller with 6 young ladies or so that are just past the brooder stage and ready to go out into the bigger world. There is a Mennonite community nearby, so I may start my search by attending their monthly animal sale.

This site is huge, the number of posts is incredible, and it's perplexing on where to start. I'll plunge in and imagine it will be like everything else in that it will start making more sense and before long, I'll have the rudimentary stuff down. I hope so anyway. I'm looking forward to learning, and I'm betting this site can teach me something new with each visit.

One more thing, in my perusing postings I see mention of shows--are there chicken shows? I know all about gun shows but never heard of a chicken show. But then, I wasn't looking for one either. Feel free to enlighten me, it would be appreciated.

The "show" I think you are hearing about refer to county fair type shows where farmers and students (4H and FFA) raise animals to compete. As far as breeds, if you aren't planning on keeping a rooster and hatching out eggs try several different types. We really liked the rhode island reds but when we went to add to our flock our supplier only had buff orpingtons. This was a blessing in disguise because we now like them better. I have raised black australorps, barred rocks, americaunas, rhode island reds, buff orpingtons, Cornish crosses, and a silver laced Wyandotte. I have nothing negative to say about any of the breeds. They all offer a unique personality to my farm. Best of luck in you decision but most of all enjoy it!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Yes there are chicken shows, all kinds, from 4-H and county and state fairs and Breed club shows (almost all breeds will have their own clubs and those clubs will hold shows or have classes at big shows), here is a list of some http://www.poultryshowcentral.com/Tennessee.html and then there are Swaps and just Meet-Ups or trading days etc, check out the BYC forum https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/8/chickenstocks-shows-meet-ups and your local state thread if people know of any coming up https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/226276/tennessee Your state thread is also a good place to check out what birds are available locally and find out what breeds people in your area are happy with.
The number of breeds is incredibly confusing, and there always seem to be more you find out about. Besides just plain liking the look of a mixed flock with the all the different feather colors and possible egg colors, a lot of people do like to start with a mixed flock, that way you get to know a number of breeds and pick your favorites... and half the time you wind up liking a breed you got accidentally you didn't think you would like, so much for planning. Most breeds of a general type are pretty similar, ie the heavy or duel purpose brown egg layers are all pretty similar to each other in temperament, the light Mediterranean / leghorn types etc, so if you know what type you want, just get one or two of each breed and see who your favorites turn out to be.... and then there are egg colors, Easter Eggers are a nice breed and those pretty blue/green eggs, and the Marans and Welsummers for dark brown eggs ....

Thanks for all the info and suggestions. It seems there aren't any shows listed for my area, the Southeast corner of TN. Being so near to Georgia and Alabama, I checked their listings and found several within an hour or so, which is about as close as Knoxville, TN. Between all those choices, I should be able to find one to try, but I appear to have missed the spring shows. Maybe this fall.

Today I'm again thinking Buff Orpington, we'll see how long that lasts. Via the links suggested and craigslist, I've found several sellers, but haven't inquired of any and won't until I have the tractor ready. There was a user here on the forum who lives near the Mennonite farms I mentioned listed as a breeder/seller, but I haven't seen postings from her since '09 or so. If shes still in business, I should be able to get all I want/need from one trip to Delano, TN.

Thanks again.

Welcome to the BYC. Good luck with deciding on your breed. It becomes easoer once you know what your goals are... Iow do you just want poultry for eggs or for meat also? Do you want to breed and perpetuate what you get or simply raise them and replace them periodically? Lots of things to consider but those first two questions will begin to point you in the right direction.
Glad to have another East TN chicken lover here... I am just north of Chattanooga and raise a variety of Poultry, Am Chin rabbits, dexter cattle for both meat and milk, and meat and dairy sheep.
Welcome
