I am old retired guy that's been raising free range chickens for eggs in South Central Texas since 2012. My current flock of 43 birds includes Wyandottes, Black Austrolorps, Rhode Island Reds, New Hampshire Reds, and Buff Orpingtons. Their house is a 10'x12' simple slant roof building that's fortified with 1/4" screen on the door and East facing window and chicken wire screen covering the eves and other windows. The small poultry house yard is surrounded by a six foot chicken wire fence. What I mean by free range is that the poultry house door and yard gate is open pretty much from sunrise to sunset every day. My flock of chickens is currently and has been registered with the State of Texas since 2013. These days I donate all the extra eggs to one of the local food pantries. My partners in this adventure include 2 male cats that grew up around the Chickens and currently 3 or 4 other cats that come and go as they please. The chickens have taken the dominate role around the cats especially if there is food involved.
I found this site some time ago during one of my searches for information regarding raising chickens and / or dealing with predators. There's plenty of information here in this forum and I hope that at some point the meager input that I might be able to provide would help.
