My husband and I have been talking about getting chicken for the past 6 months and are finally ready to jump in feet first! We live on an acre of land that was my grandmother's. Fortunately her large chicken coop is still functional with only minor repairs and the chickens will have a large area to free range.

Our main question before we order our chicks is "How many chicks is too many when you're first starting out?" Several of the hatcheries we researched have minimum orders of either 15 or 25. Is starting out with 25 a huge undertaking? I'm so numbers driven that when I saw we could get 25 chicks for the same price as 15 (from different hatcheries), I immediately said "Why not 25?". The DH wasn't so keen on my farm economics.

We're so excited about joining the BYC family and have already gained so much knowledge from you all! Hoping to get some feedback.

Cheers!

. From Eastern Wa. If you are going to order straight run chicks then the law of averages says you will end up with 50/50 hens & roos. So you will have to rehome most of the Roos or butcher. Plus there's always chicken math. LoL hope this helps.

Welcome! Something to keep in mind: more chickens = more poo = more cleaning. Even if you only clean your coop twice a year, 25 make a heck of a lot more mess than 10 or 12 or whatever other number you were considering. There's also the question of having multiple feeders, and knowing how much feed you'll be going through. That said, so far O've found them to be very easy to care for.

from NH. Chickens are very low maintenance. I have 30 mixed birds at the moment and they are very simple to care for. It takes more time to care for my 2 dogs than my 30 birds. Good luck.

It's called "chicken math" .. and it doesn't really matter how many you start out with .. you'll always end up with more than you ever thought you would!

Welcome!!

try mypetchicken.com! you can get as few as 3 chicks, depending on where you live, and if you get some sex link chickens, you wont have to pay for sexing! you can get 1 roo and however many hens. hope this helps!

Where do you live in Texas? I live in Austin and two feed stores have chicks now. You can get as many as you want. Criagslist has lots of chicks posted too. I just started 5 months ago and I think for me that many would have been overwhelming to start. I started with 6 but I think I am fixing to add more.....I have to stay out of the feed store.
