Howdy Y'all!! I just joined BackYard Chickens after constantly being directed here from Google searches! I am excited to be here and have enjoyed seeing posts and pictures from other members. I live in Lexington, Texas which is east of Austin, Texas. I work from home so I am able to spend some extra time with my flock!
Currently I have 24 Americana hens and one rooster, 10 Barnevelder hens, and 1 Bantam hen that we call Ugly. The Barnevelders are excellent egg layers and provide us with large - beautiful brown eggs. Our Americana's lay the greenish/blueish eggs. Then there is Ugly who doesn't lay any eggs but sits on everyone else's eggs. (She was a rescue chicken we got from my father in law.) We get anywhere from 12 to 19 eggs a day from our flock right now.
I also have 24 baby quail and 3 turkey chicks. We are excited to raise these babies! I had never heard a quail before but when we went to pick up the chicks the lady showed me her pens and the adult quail sounded so beautiful! I can not wait until mine are old enough to make those sounds. I was so surprised at how small the babies were! We took a large dog kennel with us to pick up the chicks thinking we would need space for all of them. The lady told me she had them ready to go and handed me a small box - I was shocked!!! So small and cute!
21 days ago I put 27 brown eggs in the incubator to see what would happen and so far I have 6 chicks and two eggs that have signs of a pending break out! Last month we provided the Ag teacher with 3 dozen eggs that he put in his incubator and let the students follow the incubation process - he hatched all but 7 eggs successfully. The chicks all went to good homes and are doing well.
Every weekend my neighbors granddaughter comes over to collect eggs and feed the chickens with me. She is 11 years old and loves to help with the chickens. I enjoy teaching her and passing the love of chickens on to her. It makes me feel less obsessed with chickens when someone else shows interest in them! hahaha
I look forward to being a part of BackYard Chickens!
