Im looking forward to meeting yall here on BYC! I'm fixing to build my first coop and buy my first chickens. I have alot to learn so I figured this was the best place to start. =)

Howdy from Illinois. We have many members in Texas, and you can meet them by posting on the Texas thread at 'where am I, where are you," in the social forum. They would be in the best position to tell you what is needed to get through the climate, type of coop, predators, etc. etc. Glad you joined the BYC flock.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. My wife and I were both raised in the great state of Texas not too far from where you are (Blue Ridge for her, Greenville for me). Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your coop built and in getting your chickens.

Thanks Michael. I'm trying to figure out what kind of chickens to get. Looking for a good fryer and layer that can handle the temperature swings the best. Any suggestions?

You're welcome. I would suggest Australorps. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds), and they are extremely hardy in both heat and cold. I've raised them where summer temperatures frequently reached 117-118 F (sometimes more) and where winter temperatures dropped to 30 F below zero, and in east Texas where summers are very hot and humid, and in all those climate extremes, they did just fine. Australorps are also a very calm and gentle breed (my children and granddaughter made lap pets of them), and they are the best layers of the standard, brown egg laying breeds. A Black Australorp holds the brown egg laying record with 364 eggs in 365 days, and while none of mine have ever reached that kind of production (and likely never will), I've still had some of them lay over 300 eggs per year. In addition, Australorps are larger enough to make decent fryers. Whatever breed you decide to get, good luck with your flock.)

Thanks so much Michael! I have been leaning towards this breed based on what I have read so far but I didnt know they were such prolific layers. Wow! Being so gentle is a plus since we have 0 experience raising chickens. Thanks for the Info!

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Good luck with this new adventure! You've definitely come to the place for learning and chatting about chickens! Feel free to ask any questions you may have; we are happy to help.
