We have started with 20 hens and we are learning on the fly with the help of you fine folks on these forums. Thanks y'all.
 
Well Howdy and welcome to Backyard Chickens. 20 sounds like a good number to start with , what breeds do you have? If you go to "where am I, where are you," in the social forum you can locate and post on your state thread.

Good way to find chickeners in the neighborhood, or the best feed stores, etc.
 
We live near Coldsprings. We stared with Rbode IsIand Reds, Barred Rock, Americaunas, Buff Orpingtons, Black Sexlinks. We've got 10 that are 20 weeks and 10 that are 15 weeks. We have had them for 2 weeks saturday and got our first egg yesterday.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. Congratulations! It's always so exciting getting that first egg. I've had all of your breeds at one time or another over the past 50 years and you have some really hardy, dependable, good laying breeds. Technically Ameraucanas (assuming they're Easter Eggers, which is almost always the case) and Black Sex Links are not actually breeds, but hybrids. Black Sex Links are my favorite chickens and they are egg laying machines. I've raised them for years and they have been my best layers, consistently laying more than 300 eggs per hen per year. Well thanks y'all. We found 2 more today and the surprising thing is they were in my 2 highest nesting boxes that I was getting ready to lower. How long are eggs edible in nesting boxes if you don't find them? These three eggs are pretry small. Do they get larger as the hens get older?
