Greetings to all, fellow chicken-peeps! I have found BYC to be a wealth of information and have had some real fun browsing posts for the heck of it. So here I am, all official-like, and I hope I can pitch in from time to time...hopefully more than I'll be asking for help from this wonderful community!
I have a pretty busy little just-outside-the-city-limits operation going on here, with 19 blue and splash Orpingtons (though about half are crossed with other breeds, but are still blue!), 8 mottled and black Javas (but ONE WHITE peep! YAY!), an Americauna, and a big-britches "black broiler" hen who is just about the best thing going. I also have 5 Slate turkeys (can you tell I like blue feathers?!) and two big fat BB Bronze, plus two Khaki Campbell ducks. I also have a marvelous border collie/Australian shepherd and a black mutt doggie, plus a six-year-old farmer-in-training and a very tolerant husband. I've kept chickens and turkeys full-time for about six years now, and raise them for both eggs and meat. I know that we are lucky to free-range our poultry and raise them organically. This year is the first that I've hatched our own, both in an incubator and under a broody. I enjoy learning new things and am always willing to give it a try!
I've lived on the southern Oregon coast for two years, but spent thirteen years in south-central Alaska, where I first realized that keeping chickens was a must. Chickens in Oregon are far more carefree year-round, and I like that they have the ability to free-range full-time in this super-mild climate.
Many thanks in advance to all the good folks who will no doubt weigh in during some of my better head-scratching moments!
Judy
