Howdy from upstate SC

We live in the Upstate of SC as well (in the Clover/Lake Wylie area). Given we are NOT in AGC (agriculture) zoned area, we are not legally permitted to have chickens (or anything that involves the care and feeding of livestock). The ordinance is a law by exception - meaning if the specific animal (i.e. chickens, honey bees, and even rabbits) isn't mentioned - then it is illegal to keep in your backyard. We found this out the hard way. However, we are going to try to raise chickens (quiet ones) without raising the ire of our nosy - unhappy neighbor. I am interested to see what county you live and what suggestions anyone has to our problem?

I live in Oconee county just west of Clemson, almost at the GA line. Pretty rural out here for the most part. We live "in town" but outside city limits. Our county ordinances are fairly unrestrictive since there is a fair amount of agriculture out here. We live in what used to be a mill village so our immediate area is somewhat densely populated. Luckily for me I have a decent sized fenced back yard and both next door neighbors are very nice and were amenable to me owning a small backyard flock. If that were not the case I would consider a privacy fence if funds allowed, or constructing a covert coop: (coop that looks like something other than a coop). I have seen some interesting designs in some of the books at tractor supply that would camouflage to the casual onlooker and still be eye pleasing.
