My name is Barbara and we are new to raising backyard chickens. We have 7 Barred Rocks and 8 Black Australorps. They were both July 12th, 2022 and we received them when they were two days old. We managed to keep them alive during the arctic blast! YAY! And they started laying their first eggs mid-December. They are laying about 11-12/day now. We are very excited to learn more about raising chickens and already thinking about getting more. :jumpy
 
Welcome tot he BYC family.
Make sure your coop is large enough before adding more and be sure so to order day old chicks again so you have less of a chance of introducing disease to your existing flock.

Thank you for the tip on ordering day old again. We don't want diseases!! We are going to build/buy a new coop as the one that we have now is just enough for the 15 we have. We have the coop sitting in the middle of a 10'x36x secured run. And then when we open the door to the run they are outside in a 200' grazing area surrounded by poultry fencing. All day they are in/out of the coop/run and outside in the fenced area. We have two Anatolian Shepherds who protect the yard and us. :) They have been close to the chickens with no problems, but only under our supervision. Our male is 2yo and female is 4yo and they didn't grow up with chickens. Our hope is to one day let the chickens free range on our entire property ... but for now we watch them closely. Our dogs don't bother them and do watch out for big scary flying things above or skunky things that also seem to wander around in our area.
