Howdy There to yall. UT newbie

This is their "Chicken House". I will be attaching chain link fencing to the front of the house and out 20'. The area will have a screened roof so that things can not get in from the top. The house is 8.5' wide 5' deep and at the back is 5' tall the front is just shy of 7'. It is 28" off the ground (i am going to put a small sand box under it for them to dust in) The nesting box is the entire depth of the house and 20" deep. It has 3 separate boxes. Everything you see in the photo minus the straw and shingles was either left here by the previous home owner or stuff I collected from friends and neighbors. All in all I spent around $100 for this house :D

I enlarged your photo and notice a few things you might want to correct asap. First, put some "cross-slats" up that ramp. Right now it might work okay, but in wet weather it'll be a slippery slope indeed! Secondly, you need to put hardware cloth over all your window openings. As previous posters have said you more than likely DO have predators around, you just haven't seen them....yet. Now that you have chickens they'll be around eventually!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You've gotten some good suggestions above, X3 on hardware cloth for predator protection, you have a very nice looking coop build started, good luck with your new flock!

Yeah it is still a work in process. I still need to attach my wood slats for the rungs on the ramp, I still need to put shingles on the nest box, I still need to attach the fence. All of the openings are covered with heavy gauge wire mesh, and the windows are plexy glass. Oh and I still need to attach the shutters on the windows. Working 60 hours a week doesn't give much time for these type of spur of the moment construction projects :D

I am positive nothing will be getting in. The wire is set in 1" square. And it is basically weaved together and then welded. Thanks for the concern though :D I understand that none of yall know my back ground and I would not expect you to. I am very thorough with all projects I take on. That house as it sits has over 14 hours of build time. It is built better than the house I live in. On the inside where the roof meets the walls, I have coated nylon webbing secured to the wood with 1" aluminum flat bar and the screws are at 6" spacing. On the outside eves is where I have the heavy steel wire mats secured with flat bar as well. All of the doors have heavy duty hinges and multiple latches to lock it tight. I have enough edging stones to completely surround the perimeter of the entire enclosure to prevent animals digging into it from the sides. I have taken all precautions imaginable to protect my birds from predators and my kids simply being kids. Once again, thank you for your concern, and also for your input.
