I am living in central Minnesota, am a YOUNG (at heart) retiree and grandmother. I have been interested in growing my own food and decided, against my husband's concerns, to raise chickens for their eggs. Its been six interesting months and I do not think I will ever be without chickens again.

Chickens are addictive as many here will tell you, lol. Congrats on getting a flock, what breed of birds do you have?

Thanks NorthFLChick I will look at the Minnesota members threads I was trying to find something from those up here in the north country. I have three black Australops (1 is a roo); two ISA's (one is a roo) and these birds are six months old. Then I fell in love with RIR so I have two 3 1/2 month old pullets. I am getting eggs from the Australops and the ISA (Gold Star.) The roos are not rooing yet - may have to give one up if they are two loud. I was not planning on having any roosters when I purchased my chicks. I live in a township so there are no rules about how many roosters can thrive on our 2 acres. What a hoot! The neighbor took care of them this past weekend (he is chicken wise) and said they kept wanting him to pick them up. LOL.
 
Well Good Morning Everyone in BYC Land! I am having empty nest syndrome and I haven't really 'reacted' to this yet. My three Australops are gone. Vanished! Since yesterday. So much for free-range chickens because the other four (two are RIR and 2 are Gold Stars) are on lock down. If you do not have chickens - you do not have eggs and if free-range means no chickens I guess that the choice is not to free-range them. I guess I am a little upset. Nature! If I want to play the game I need to be a big girl and accept the rules.

On the flip side - this takes care of many issues: NO need to enlarge the coop or run; no more chix poop on the walkways; down to one roo. But this interesting. My Gold Star rooster looks like a rooster. However 'it' has taken to the nesting box a couple of times now. It is after I have collected the egg from the Gold Star hen. And then when 'it' leaves the nest there is an egg left behind. Now that they are confined I will be able to watch this closer but what are the possibilities? Hmmmmmmm

Incidentally, I live in Big Lake, Sherburne County.
