hows my brooder set up?

It looks good but the chicks don't really have anyplace to go that's cooler. I'd move the feeder to be kitty corner (diagonally across) from where your waterer is so that they can get to that far corner if they are feeling too hot. That's where all of mine like to sleep, in the corner away from the heat in a ball. It also keeps them from tossing much food into the water (and they do love to toss food around)

This happened to me; I ordered 11 and got 21! I had to set up another brooder within a week....

Yikes. Don't tell me that. What were the peanuts, broiler boys? Think 8, think 8, think 8. Extra roosters would have to be "rehomed" or sent to freezer camp, and I hate that idea. Was your order from MPC?

I think your set up looks great but they will grow out of such a small brooder v. quickly so be ready with the next size straight away. We used a very big cardboard box sectioned off so we could gradually increase the space as they grew - it worked well.

Mine came from Ideal; I think MPC ships less because they include a heating pad or something. My peanuts were silver laced wyandottes. They are really pretty and tame even though I didn't spend much time taming them (since they will be going to freezer camp. ) Hope you get just what you want!

If they are getting to hot just have half of the heat lamp hitting a corner and the other half not getting the brooder. Like on the outside of it.

I would never suggest to someone who is new to raising chicks to not get a thermometer, Someone who is experienced in raising chicks might very well know all the signs to look for. Some breeds adapt differently you should always keep a thermometer handy at all times. Don't depends on what the chicks do or don't do I have heard storys of chicks falling asleep under lights and it got hot and they died,
This is just my 2 cents there are alot of people who have been doing this a long time and don't require certian things because they have learned how to read chicks. But as a new flock owner I would find a good guide and follow it. I wrote one when I was bored your welcome to view it but by your current set up it looks fine for 3 chicks my only consern is to me 3 is a bad number odd numbers just don't seem well to me if things get hectic try adding a new member to the flock.
