After discussing all the possible options, considering the needs of the family, the setup of our house, and the presence of the cats, we decided to put the incubator in the laundry room. But it's a little cooler in there and there is a door where we have to take the cat litter out.
DH bought me a set of shelves we'd been thinking about getting anyway and I've set up a space for the incubator that ought to be catproof, well-ventilated, but capable of trapping some of the heat from the incubator and easily protected from drafts -- the 16yo can throw a towel over the front before changing the cat box.
What do you think? Any improvements?
The two wire panels that are secured by carabiners hinge upward and can be clipped to the next shelf. The end panel is wired in place as is the cardboard spacer. I can remove the towels if it gets too warm in there come summer.
