In convincing my husband that we needed to get chickens in the first place, I said.. you know.. maybe 3 hens. It took some convincing, but he agreed to JUST 3 hens.
Well, I called a local breeder for some chicks and she was shocked and horrified and thought that it should be illegal to have fewer than six! O...Kaaaay. I told hubby about that call and he said NO MORE THAN FOUR.
So, I placed an order for four chicks with MPC.com (we do live very close to an international airport, so I thought we met their requirements). Got a call a few days later.. "you need to have 8 chicks at a minimum to ship." OK.. double the order- I'll find homes for the others.
An ad on Craigslist soon found new families for the "extra" chicks that would be arriving. Hubby was nervous, but ok with the plan. Two would be going to a farm that I was already familiar with. The other two would be going to another BYCer plus I had two backup families for those chicks.
Well.. one set of chicks still has a new home to go to. The other family.. and the backup.. and the backup to the backup all had to say No after the chicks actually arrived for various reasons for which I do not fault any of them. Hmm... what are we going to do with these extra chicks that are now HERE and living in our garage and being so cute?
I asked hubby if he wanted to ask any of his friends if they wanted chicks....... he said.. "Well, why don't we just KEEP those? Isn't six the ideal number?"
