Lol...that's just too funny. My wife's only exposure to chickens, was at Chruches, KFC, or the grocery store. I had talked her into a " few ". She made me get a built coop, and a roll of screen. She ordered a coop that was big enough for 4-6 Chickens. She, I guess, didn't realize how BIG standard size chickens were, after we had ordered 9 from MPC. So... built a new coop, and just put up 200' of 2x4 welded wire. The smaller coop will be plenty big for my 4 seramas.... FOR NOW... AAAHHH HA HA HA... "Evil Laugh"
I gave DH the 4 sq feet per chicken coop info.. then suggested we build the coop out of free pallets. Pallets are 4x4, but I found some that were 4x7. So instead of a 4x8 coop, I got an 8x14 foot coop for 18 chickens.
They only sleep and lay eggs in there, and free range all day, so I figure I have room for 15 more.
I am going to try hatching my own in late winter. I expect a 30% hatch rate, so I built an incubator that will incubate 3 dozen eggs. That will give me 12 more, but half of those will be roosters... So I will do it twice... six dozen eggs total.
Now... lets look at all the pretty chicken pictures to choose which breeds to find!
I was talking chicken with one of my co-workers and when I told her I have 33 chickens she looked at me in shock and repeated "33"?. My response was yes, but 26 of them are silkies and since 1 silkie is really 1/2 of a real chicken I only have 20 birds total. Now she thinks I'm a little crazy and bad at match
