Hudson Valley NY *chat thread*

Coupe, Holderread is waterfowl farm & Preservation Center. I order 10 Welsh Harlequin duckling, they have the better quality duckling. We will see what happen!
Hopefully I will have good luck. Do you free range your ducks?

Do you guys know of any places around here to get ducks? Or a close hatchery that sells them? Im thinking of getting a few ducklings and I dont want them to have to be shipped across the country :/
Also, do you guys house your chickens and ducks together.

I try to free range them as much as possible, in winter they are penned upfor the most part, but spring and summer they are out and about. They dont venture very far tho lol

Highland Tractor Supply will have ducklings or atleast they normaly do when the chicks come in!
In summer I have my ducks in a different coop than the chickens..just because they are messy. In winter they sleep in the chicken coop..I dont use extra heat or lighting, so I put everyone together for more warmth.

Coupe do you have a pond for your ducks or a swimming pool? I had 2 Rouen duckling last year and they got in my pond with the wild duck and didn't come back. I'll hoping this isn't going to happen to me again. Did you have to clip their wings? I'm worried about them flying away!

No pond for them yet! I do have a goldfish pond that they enjoy destroying but its not nearly big enough for my 5 muscovies!plus they love trying to catch my goldfish so this year ill be putting some netting over the pond. i use 2 kiddie pools and I also have a large blow up pool that the dogs use lol. It dosnt look very nice but they work!
I dont have to clip wings..drake muscovies are to heavy to fly very well, and the hens just follow the drake around.
Iv never owned any of the smaller breeds...we dont want ducks that quack lol. but my best guess would be to clip their wings. But then you have to worry about predators because they cant fly :(

Okay. Im also going to look at a local feed store where I know the owners and they can tell me exactly what they get not just that they pick them up at the post office lol. (Thats what TSC told me)
Knowing as much about.chickens as I do now it was very upsetting to see the chicks in tractor supply, they had them on shavings instead of paper towels and the chicks were all eating shavings not food and the water had so much shavings in it and the chicks had only been there a little while cuz there wasnt any poop on the shavings yet and also the chicks kept getting into the waterer cuz it wasnt a chick waterer.
Sorry for the rant, its just something that upsets me..

TSC isnt the best when it comes to having any knowledge on chicks. I dont see anything wrongn with raising chicks on wood shavings because I do also. But the employees could care less about the chicks/ducklings.
Theres the Natrual feed store in Gardiner at Ireland corners...they get chicks aswell, but I do not know when they come in..its a small store, but probably cars more about the well being of the animals they sell.
