Hudson Valley NY *chat thread*

Yay! What did you get?
2 Black Giants, 2 Reds (TSC couldn't tell me if they were New Hampshires or Rhode Islands?) And 2 Pullets that I believe are Ameracauna but again, they could not tell me. LOL I will just have to wait and see.

Glad I did a bit of studying before going to get the chicks... I knew to look for mud-butt. and there were a few I picked up that were quite pasty.

So now the search is on for a coop and a run. WOW are they noisy! I have them in the basement and I can hear them all the way on the second floor! My cats are going nuts looking for them. LOL WheeeeeEEEE!!!!

The fun is just beginning! Sounds like a nice assortment. The reds might be red sex links also, they are great layers. Hoping for all girls?

They usually settle down a bit once they get a full belly and situate themselves under that heat lamp to cuddle. There are times you will look at them and swear they are dead, but they are just napping in a very odd position.

I checked the temps in the box...right under the light it is 95 and in the furthest corner it is 80. They seem to be fine..all over the place. And they are using the feeder as a perch! One of the reds fell asleep with her head inside one of the feeder holes. Hubby cuddled one on his lap for awhile snuggled in a towel. Chicky fell fast asleep in his arms.

Sounds just like it should be!

You have probably read this already, but you will know if they are too hot or cold by how they spread out or pile up. Piled up under the light = too cold, spread out far from the light = too hot. As long as they have a range in the box they will pick what feels good to them. Check them for pasty butt every day (and if you find it just dab it with a warm cloth until it loosens up and comes off), it is common in shipped chicks and easily cared for. Otherwise feed, water, and dry bedding and that is as complicated as it is. Not much different when they are adults, except that the mess is a bit bigger and more pungent

It's my co-worker's fault. She brought them in and they wound up in my cubicle next to the pretzels which (thankfully) aren't my favorite things ever unless they're stuffed with peanut butter (like the ones they sell at TSC which call my name every time I go). The Oreos speak to me also. Job StReSs. That's my story...
