Hudson Valley NY *chat thread*

I use shavings and Sweet PDZ on the coop floors and hay in the nesting boxes. I think I went through about 4 bags of shavings last Summer.
I'm considering trying shredded shavings. DH built a really nice composter with a car wash soap barrel last Spring. I checked it last week and it's ready to use so I want to dump what's in the composter into the garden and start another batch ASAP...was hoping shredded shavings would break down faster. Have you tried shredded shavings? Anyone? Pros? Cons?

Can't wait to clean out those coops. They're starting to smell :barnie

I use shredded shavings in my brooder and my rabbit cages(when they come inside) I like the shredded alot! Havnt used it in the coops tho

Im seriously dreading cleaning the coops! Its going to be like a 2 day job..and ill probly need to spray them out with the hose and some bleach. I will never ever do the deep litter again!

LS-we must have been on the same wavelength lol

Was this winter the first time you've used the DLM?
I'm dreading the clean up but at the same time, I'm kinda looking forward to finally getting it done. I just don't know HOW I'm going to execute this lol. The easiest option is to push the litter through the pop door with a broom into the run. Then I don't know WHAT to do. Should I:: Let it sit in the run so the chickens can spread it out? Till it into the dirt in the run? Shovel it into something and dump it in the composter? There's going to be A LOT of it so maybe I should just start a compost pile and keep feeding the composter as it breaks down?

At a loss here lol

And you're right... it's definitely going to be a 2 day job! My son is on Easter break the week of April 14 which means I have to take that week off...guess I'll be tackling the coops that week!

My incubator was 104 degrees when I got home today. I was Sooo upset, but my neighbor who is a pro said they should be fine. I will candle on Saturday and see. Fingers crossed.

Oh no! I hope they're ok ! I have some eggs in the incubator also. We have 3 thermometers set up. 2 are reading 99.5 - 100 deg. The other says 100+. Majority rules. Here goes nothin'...!
