Hudson Valley NY *chat thread*

SO I sent my son up to the coop to gather eggs the other day. I have two broody buff orps in that coop. We're not entirely sure when these eggs are going to hatch...any day hopefully. Anyway, I said "Zachy...when you get up there listen carefully and tell me if you hear any peeps." Silly me...I thought he knew I meant he should just lean towards the nesting boxes and listen for any peeps coming from the eggs under the hens, but no.....he came running down the hill holding an egg to each ear declaring "I don't hear anything mom!"

It's one of those you-had-to-be-there stories but every time I think of it I spontaneously laugh out loud. Classic Zach...

Awww~ They're getting so big and lucky to have such good protectors :D
Did you get any more chicks?
I got the two Jersey Giants but that's it. They're almost 3 months old and they're huge! They're as big as some of the full sized chickens I lost!
The chicks are doing good. Even the little black one is catching up to the others. He seemed to lack a little in the social skills department but he's hanging out with the rest of the crowd now.
I am getting ducks. My boyfriend doesn't know yet. I'm not sure how I'm gonna explain that one.. "I don't know what happened.. They were suppose to be chickens.." LOL
But I'm working on scheduling a time to meet up with someone I met on here. We're trying for tomorrow. She's got 4 Cayuga ducklings, 1 and 2 weeks old. I'm going to try to brood them with the chicks until the ducks get too big.
I only have 2 weeks to go before the 40 eggs in the incubator are due. Oh boy, I'm gonna be overrun with chicks soon! I may just have to sell some chicks. I should do that.. Pick my favorites and sell like 10-20 chicks to try to help offset cost. Problem with that is that chicks are way too freakin cute! I wanna keep them ALL!

Wow, chicken math! Its hard to find room for all those cuties, isn't it? I bought 2 goslings yesterday. Blue Sebastopol & one is a Toulouse/Sebastopol cross. They're in the barn.. my husband doesn't know yet. Sometimes he gets this look on his face when he's trying to understand how 4 ducks turned into 8! My 7 year old daughter said, "Let's tell him they're ducks, he won't know". Smart kid.

Hi everybody, so i have a young rooster I hatched late last year, who insist on chasing my young ducklings and coupling with them now i don't know if he is confused of if its because he is at the very bottom of the rooster pole but has anyone had this problem? If it continues i might to to get rid of him too afraid he might hurt my babies.

Getting it anywhere he can. I had a rowdy rooster in solitary confinement that found a rock while biting a stick made a suitable mount...
