Hudson Valley NY *chat thread*

I was thinking about australorps at first but i thought they were just plain black so i changed my mind. But lastnight i saw how theyre feathers look in the sun and i felt like i gotta have one lol. I still have a month to go probably before i can getting any, but i think the list of options i have will satisfy both me and my dad. I love this site and am on it multiple times a day just browsing and reading as much as i can.

SO many good people and a lot of great advice here. You've definitely come to the right place.
Gertie, my australorp, is one of my favorite girls. She's one of the bossier ones but she's really nice and I love the green iridescence in her feathers.

We had some chicken drama last night. DH said he was just dozing off when he heard havoc from the coop. The motion light went on and when he looked out the window, he saw a fox. The coop door opens into the (secure) run but the door was shut so they were all roosting in the run. The fox managed to grab one of the Leghorn's tails but only pulled a few feathers out. Our first attempted breach., Not cool !!

Thank you! I'm glad they're all ok too. Close call !
When I went out there to put them in the coop they were at my feet tsk-tsking and cluck-clucking as if they were telling me all about it. I agreed that all girls need their uninterrupted beauty sleep and that the fox should just mind its own business next time. My miniature schnauzer sounds exactly like Joe Pesci when he talks to me. It's true...

Peace out~
I'm off to clean the coops

I'm obsessed too. My son spent the night at his grandmother's so DH and I went out for dinner. On the way home he asked me what I had planned to do today while he's at work. I said "Can you bring the tractor up from the garage for me before you leave? I want to clean the coops first thing in the morning."

WHO SAYS THAT!?!!!! (ALL of us!!!)

My dad asked me lastnight what my plans were for today because he needs my help moving and i said nothing. Was just going to spend the day in the backyard chicken learning center lol. He told me if i get a brooder i can get chicks!!!! But i must weigh the costs of raising chicks to paying more per bird if i got older ones who are getting ready to start laying or already have. Im determined to present numbers in my favor lol.

My goodness..must have been the day for it. I was out at 7am cleaning the coop and even at that hour, my middle aged body was drenched in sweat. Felt good! Yay for crones! :)

Still tweaking the run. Framework up and needs to be painted before adding welded wire and hardware cloth skirts. Going on the hippy chick theme. Groovy! Here is the sign I painted for the coop door along with some funky flowers for the fence. Having too much fun with this and starting to get eyerolls from friends and family if I mention chickens
