Everything thats down there is up on blocks and pallets ..so they dont get wet...just old fish tanks and cages back from when i had alot of reptiles..we use to have a small raft down there, and it would flood out and i would float around on the raft lmao.. The pump down there can only do so much when we have heavy rains

Ugh! Sorry about your basement...this rain is really depressing and saps your energy. I have an ear infection and need to see a doc today, the low pressure and weather is not helping. Can't get any gardening done, or painting. I'm sure everyone's chickens are wallowing in a mud bath in their runs, we really need some dry weather.

I am very new to all of this and was wondering if anyone in our area uses sand in their coop? If so how does it fair in winter?

Sand, my friend....is the best thng i have ever put in my run! I do not have it in the coop yet...but i will next year maybe. But in the run, it has done wonders for me!!! It use to be a big mud pit and i had to wear big rubber boots to go in there when it rained! I put maybe 2 inches of sand down and the chickens are now high and dry!! I can walk in there with flip flops on when it raining! cleaning is a breeze, i rake the poo up into little piles and remove it. It takes about 5 mins and i have a 16'x16' run!
I havnt had it over the winter yet..i just put sand in this spring!!
