The runs not finished..still gotta put more sand in..but heres a pic for you..its a 16'x16'x6' run. And i have to buy another lattic for the rest of the side. It really does make the run look so much cleaner! It use to be dirt/hay which didnt look to nice.

Its sorta hard to get the hole thing in a pic lol..also, the sand isnt like play sand..it has pebbles and is course.

Hello! I have come to join the group. = ) I'm a new chicken keeper in Newburgh. My hubby is finishing up converting our kids cedar play gym into our new chicken coop...I'll be painting and making the homey touches soon. We have 6 chicks: 1 NH Red, 1 Buff Orpington, 1 Auracana, 1Silver Laced Wyandotte, 2 Black Australorps, and 1 adult RI Red hen. The RI Red got us started...she was discarded in a field in the last snow storm we had because her previous owner said she was sick, going to die, and didn't want her infecting her other chickens....so we went to rescue her ...some meds, de-lousing, and TLC and she is right as rain. She was a house pet (and a very good one) until last week when we moved her out to the coop. I'm actually not sure about our local ordinances for the Town of Newburgh...I tried looking online, but couldn't find anything....please, oh please tell me that chickens are allowed! I told hubby that they were...just not roosters. Although...I think that one of our Australorps is in fact a rooster in the making...I'll figure out how to add pics and y'all can tell me what you think. We got them from the Natural Pet Center in Gardiner....supposed to be all females. : ( Okay, I have kids to shuffle off to bed...I'll hopefully get some computer time later....this is from my Kindle and kind of annoying to use...(so please ignore any typos) Lol Thanks! It looks GREAT! I love your whole setup! The sand and the lattice make it look so nice and clean.
Our run is dirt and leaves and straw and when the chickens flit around in there, the dust clouds are overwhelming. I thought putting the straw and leaves down would keep some moisture in and help keep the clouds to a minimum (wronnnng!). Sand is something I'm definitely going to try down the road. I'm so new at this whole chicken gig I know I'm going to be driving my DH nuts changing and rearranging everything.
Earlier this week my daughter and I gathered some rocks from our property and made a rock planter by the run. DH and I got some stuff planted in there today...it was a challenge keeping the Ladies out of it lol We also cleaned up the construction debris from building the coop and run, weeded all the flower beds, planted flowers as well as some herbs, swept the patio and put some of the patio furniture out AND did a million loads of laundry. I'm so tired right now I could just. cry. I really thought I'd be in bed before my 7 yr.old son tonight. I meant to take some pictures but I ran out of energy..will do so tomorrow. How many chickens do you have? Do the ducks and chickens get along?

Welcome Laura~ I live in New Windsor. I found the local ordinances on the internet not too long ago...don't remember where unfortunately. I had been looking for awhile and found a link on a random chicken blog somewhere. New Windsor requires 5+ acres to raise poultry, horses, etc. I have 2.5 acres. A neighbor on our road has several chickens and a lot less property so I think if we stay under the radar, we'll be ok. My coop and run are pretty far from our neighbors on either side and all of my chickens are pullets although we just got 2 chicks a few weeks ago and I'm thinking 1 may be a roo. If he is indeed a roo, he's gotta go! In the meantime, I'm hoping nobody complains

. I would imagine the Town of Newburgh's ordinances are basically the same. I'll look for that link again. If I find it, I'll send it to you.

I can't believe that poor RIR was just abandoned in a field~ in a snow storm no less. So cruel. She was lucky you rescued her. Is she laying eggs? None of my chickens are laying yet. I'm so excited to get some eggs!!! We bought our first 6 chicks (all RIRs) at Tractor Supply in Highland and another 6 (various breeds) at the Natural Pet Center. One of the chicks from the NPC died a couple of days after we brought her home so we replaced her with 2 Leghorns (also from NPC). We gave 2 of the original TS chicks to DH's co-worker and just got those 2 Orpington chicks from someone in CT so have 13 chickens. Chicken Math!!!

Thanks for the welcome! Yes, our RIR (Chicken is her name ... original, I know but at the time we werent planning on expanding) is laying. She started laying about a week after we got her. She had a fav spot in one of our dogs crates ... but when she started laying in my daughters top bunk bed we figured it was time to move her out of the house. But I miss seeing her stroll around the house. My hubby went as far as to buy her a chicken diaper ... so, she'll still be coming in to visit. lol She must be happy, she lays 4-5 eggs a week! I dont know how old she is ... but she still looks and acts like a spring chicken, so to speak. I'm beat tonight too ... so I'll add more about me/us soon. P.S. here is my confession: we also have 6 female ducklings that came in a few days ago from McMurrays Hatchery: 1 black runner, 1 fawn/white runner, 1 khaki campbell, 1 peking and 2 gold star hybrid ducks. My auntie has ducks with her chickens and my family loves duck eggs! Our closest neighbors are getting won over (bribed) with my aunt's extra eggs. lol Talk soon! Hope you have a restful night!

How old is your daughter? What school does she go to? My son goes to New Windsor School. He's in 2nd grade. I also have a 17 yr, old daughter graduating from NFA in June.

TSC had ducklings when we bought our first 6 RIRs but I was afraid to get them. It was bad enough we had no idea what we were getting into w/the chicks. They're very adorable. Are they friendly?

My husband was going to get some meat birds from someone near Monticello who is downsizing his flock yesterday but he changed his mind at the last minute. I was going to cave in and buy a chicken that was either laying or about ready to. Now that the coop and run are finally completed, landscaped, etc., I'm getting impatient for eggs. Right now I'm just the nice lady with the treats.

Would love to see pictures of your flock and the coop and run when you get a chance~
