Hudson Valley NY *chat thread*

The ducks are called Muscovy and they dont make much noise at all..The drake, makes a "hissing" noise and does not quack. The hens make a light whistle noise and quack when they are scared but it is not loud..my chickens make way more noise than the ducks lol
The BF would only let me have ducks if they didnt make noise lol. But i got them when they where all older , so i didnt get to bond with them. They are still semi friendly but rather do their own thing. Pretty easy care, the only thing i have to do is change out the water in their pool every other day. So yeah i guess its just as easy as the chickens!!
Glad your DD is ok! I always say you might be a good driver but other people are not! Lol

GOOD Morning~
Talked to DH...RE: getting ducks. VETO! lol Didn't push the issue because we're still such newbies at this.
Maybe someday. I LOVE them. Especially your Muscovys..they're sooo pretty!

And thanks! I'm glad she's ok too. You're so right...other people are terrible drivers. Unfortunately it's not just on the roads. I'm starting to come across way too many ignorant, inconsiderate and rude people and my tolerance level is rapidly waning. My DH makes fun of me because I'm TOO nice. Then the aggravation builds up and I blow

How's the sand working out in your run? Do you like it? I have to do something w/ours. The fresh straw I put down the other night is now soaking wet and I'm afraid it's going to start to smell but there's no time to get sand so maybe after the cruise. The coop needs an overhaul but it doesn't stink thankfully. I love PDZ; it really helps. I haven't cleaned the coop since 4/18.

Are we the only peeps on this Hudson Valley thread? Sheesh!

Hi Guys! Sorry .. I popped in to say "Hi, here I am!" the other day then promptly vanished .. we have 4 kids too and I find it very difficult to get any computer time...that leaves me with the Kindle or my phone ..neither of which are terribly convenient for writing.

Anyway ... I hope to get pics soon. I have a question about what are supposed to be my 2 black Australorps ... their tails are quite different ... but I was checking out their developing combs, and they are nearly identical in size and light color ... I'm thinking one may be a Jersey Giant.

Our coop isn't quite finished yet ... almost there! So, then I'll be adding pics of that too. The ducklings are all doing well. They have grown sooo much in just a week!

Oh, BTW, my name is Laura. I am using "Double C" from our DoubleCDachshunds name ... we breed mini dachshunds. Well, our breeding days are soon to be over... our herd is getting older and we only have a few females that are still breeding.. the others have retired and are just chillin', loving life. lol The Inn is full at 11 minis, 1 geriatric Saint Bernard ... he's almost 12 ... and I don't think we'll have the old guy much longer : ( ..., a 1 year old shep/husky mix, 3 cats, 3 guinea pigs, 1 hamster and a spattering of tropical fish. And now, enter: chickens and ducks! LOL Yup, we're a bit touched in the head.

My oldest is 19 ( he graduated NFA last year, comm. coll. this year), the next son is 15, 10th grade at NFA, then my daughter is 14, 8th grade @ Meadow Hill and the baby is 10, he's in 5th grade @ Meadow Hill.

Ooo oo ... I almost forgot ... we also have 2 horses. My daughter has a Tennessee Walking Horse that was gifted to her in December for her birthday and I have a Quarter Horse (that I just got in January ... I got my first horse when I was 16 and she lived to a great old age ... I had forgotten how much I adore them! Well, with hubby, kids and animals I didnt think I'd have the time to devote to another horse ... but I do. We ride almost everyday ... I would say 'weather permitting' but we tend to not let the weather stop us. The horses are at my aunts place in Plattekill...about 8 miles from our house, so, not bad. Wheww... look at that...I do ramble! I am going to make an effort to check in with you guys at least once a day!

Haha maybe you can trick him into just 1 duck, and then acouple weeks down the road say he/she is lonely!! Lol
Just got another small load of sand put in and it looks good! It drains so well now!!! I use to have mud puddles when it rained. I dont know if i will be putting it in the coop yet tho...i use hay in there and it dosnt get to dirty, as long as i keep up with it..but seriously the sand in the run seems to be a blessing right now!

Wow you sound like you have your hands full!!!!
I love horses! But we dont have enough property to have any :( not that i could afford a horse.
I cant wait to see some pics of all the animals and your coop!!
Oh by the way, my names Lexi! and im sorry for the quick posts but its beautiful outside andni gotta get out there!! Lol

Hi Lexi! I posted two pics of the birds in question on another thread...I'm getting different answers from everyone. Lol I have better pics now...but for some reason they won't add on from my phone. A few coop under construction pics too. Ohh well, maybe tomorrow.
If it wasn't for my Aunt having room for our horses, I wouldn't be able to have them either. Board is outrageous around here. The price of everything is outrageous these days it seems. Okay, I'm off to sleep,I hope...have to hit good ole Tractor Supply in the morning...or,umm, after noon. =)

I looked at the pics of your australorps and to me, they look like pullets...but you wont really beable to tell for another 2-3 weeks..but in all honesty theu really look like pullets to me..i use to have 2 australorps back in the day, they are great birds!

Hi Laura~ I was glad to see you & Mz Lexi checked in! It was getting a tad lonely around here lol
I wonder if your oldest son knows my daughter. She's graduating from NFA this year Her name is Rylee.

Chicken Math doesn't only apply to chickens apparently! We have 2 dogs now; had to put our Black Lab down in November. She was 14. The miniature schnauzer and cockapoo are now in charge...especially the schnauzer. The vet calls him the Bad Boy. He's a great dog but he's a punk. The cockapoo is a sweetheart but she's SOOO bad. I adopted her from a wacky co-worker 2 years ago. I think she spent her 1st year of life abused, ignored and locked in a crate. She was underweight and really timid. She still has housebreaking accidents and I swear she has springs in her feet because she can jump and reach anything edible on the countertops and/or table. She has to be watched like a puppy. DD is highly allergic but I'd have a few cats if I could. I would love a horse if I had the $$, the room and a place to board it.

Anyway, hopefully the sun will come out today. I was just complaining last week that my run is so dry, the chickens create huge dust clouds and now it's a mud pit. Happy Mother's Day

Happy mothers day!!! The sun is shinning here , well every once in awhile lol..
I went outside this morrning because my SSH hen was screaming...walk out there, and i see the hamburg rooster sitting in the nest box on some eggs..lmao..thats the secound time iv caught him sitting on eggs..he's such a weirdo!

LOL !!!!!!!!!! Maybe he's getting in touch w/his feminine side??? Or he's really a hen and prefers dressing like a rooster ?

Either way, your post made my day. Toooo funny!!

CrAzY weekend. Had my mom come up from NJ for the weekend and planned to BBQ Saturday night with the in-laws, etc.. When my mom arrived, she wanted to see the coop so we sat and watched the chickens for a bit. A few minutes later my daughter and her fiance and their dog, Apollo arrived. THEN the torrential downpour started so we were all stuck in the run waiting for it to stop. The chickens were a little annoyed by all of the unfamiliar faces and ran to hide under the coop. Then Apollo followed the chickens....grabbed one of the Orpington chicks and that's when all hell broke loose. He trapped her wing w/his paw and started licking her. She was NOT happy and started peeping but it was more like panicked squawking. We thought he was killing her. Christopher (DD's fiance) somehow got his 6'7" body UNDER the coop to break Apollo's grip but Apollo wasn't letting go. My husband grabbed a broom to poke at the dog from the outside of the coop. It happened so fast. I didn't know what to do except hope they got Apollo out from under the coop although I didn't really think he'd hurt her but anything is possible, ya know? When my son started crying I realized the potential was there for the poor kid to witness a slaughter and just as I was going to grab something to poke at the dog, Chris got him to let the chick go. That's when we all decided it was time for beer & wine LOL Anyway the chick survived thankfully. He's a sweet dog but whoa~ does he wreak havoc when he comes over. My dogs go completely nuts. NEVER a dull moment !!!

Spent the day yesterday getting things ready for the cruise so the countdown begins. Still waiting for DD's passport though.
My MIL will let the girls out in the AM and walk the dogs and come back at 5:00 to feed the dogs and let them out again but I'm a little worried about getting the coop locked up at night. Do you think if the run is locked but the coop door stays open (which leads into the run) they'll be ok or should I ask someone to stop by when it gets dark out to close it up completely ? Things are bad when you're more worried about a bunch of chickens than the dogs! LOL
