And hello to your grandson. How old is he?
What kind of chickens do you have?

I will be putting sand in my run fairly soon too. I'm a little finatical about clean chickens. No poopy eggs here.
Seriously considering it but haven't yet. DH may have the goat pen sold so he might build a bigger coop (OR a second coop)...doesn't make sense to do anything until we figure out what we're going to do. I scooped out some wet wood shavings from under the waterer in the coop this morning. I swear they must swing from the chain the waterer is hanging from after they go in for the night! Good thing it's not a pole...Freeloading AND Pole Dancing Chickens! Anyway, I opened up a new bag of wood shavings I bought from TSC and all the shavings were moldy.

2 eggs this morning!!! Another one off the Freeloader List~

Great Lisa, who do you think is the second egg layer? LOL at pole-dancing hens...I would return those shavings to TSC if you just bought them! I hope the weather holds out for you, at least it is much cooler today than yesterday, enjoy the wedding - nice location!

Thanks! A big T-storm just passed over us. Hopefully that's it for the day.
So far, both layers are Red Sex Links. She was in the nesting box when I went to check on their food & water. Three other girls were hanging around her, peeking in the box and pacing back and forth. I wonder if they were cheering (or egging) her on.

Oh! And I forgot to mention the egg was a double yolker! Used it for my DS's breakfast lol

Looks like I'm going to TSC in the morning. Ugh. I can't get out of there without spending at least $60 !!

Lisa, I wish that we're my coop! That is a photo I took in France 2 years ago of the farm next door to my DH's uncles house in Burgundy. DH was born there and we go back every couple of years to visit his family. We had the best eggs and meat from that same little farm while we visited, so I took a pic of the chickens trying to figure out what kind they were, but Barry from the Feathersite told me he thinks they are just production hybrids, no long lost ancient French breed, LOL. Not sure about that Columbian pattern rooster though...

Welcome to all the new posters here! Sallysec, West Nyack is still not too far, I used to work in Palisades 20 years ago and colleagues and I used to make a bread run to the Rockland Bakery when we got really hungry, is that still there? You have a really nice variety of hens there. Is your Australorps laying well for you?

Today was def. hotter than yesterday, can't wait for Fall to come already, gah...
That picture is absolutely gorgeous. It must be awesome to visit France. Do you love it there? Have you been to the Eiffel Tower and all of those other wonderful places?

There are 4 chicks I believe...but heres a pic!

Also one of my Hamburg hens has gone broody!!!

Hamburgs are not know to go broody so this is awesome!
AWESOME Lexi !!! The chicks are soooo cute! I didn't know Hamburgs don't go broody. They're on my Chicken Wish List. Where did you get them? I check Craigslist for chickens all the time and all I ever see are common breeds and/ or roosters.

I bet you Mr.blue is really a hen! He/she should have atleast tried to crow by now or breed the girls.
I have 3 chicks so far and still one more egg almost finished! Ill get pics asap for you! Its just so darn hot out, I dont want to move from infront of my fan lol
I'm thinking we need to change Mr. Blue to Mizz Blue! He hasn't crowed and my husband said he saw him in the nesting box BUT he chases the silkie around the run all the time. I think he's confused! LOL

Its rare to have broody hamburg! I hope she is a good mama!
I got my 2 hamburg hens from a man who had gotten in really bad car wreck, it left him in a wheel chair. He gave me them but he had no clue what they where..he only knew they where around 5 years old..and they are about 7 now and still laying strong! Iv never seen them on craigslist either..they are concidered a rare breed. Their are large fowl (rare) and Bantams.

Wow, 7 yrs old and still laying, those must be from great stock! They are so pretty too, are they a flighty bird like a lot of the light breeds or do you find them calm and friendly?

Thank goodness it finally cooled down here tonight, hope everyone enjoys the lower temps and sleeps well tonight!

They are flighty birds. They dont like to be touched or picked up. They will let me "hang out" with them but if I move fast or try to get to close they jump away. But all in all, their great layers and beautiful birds! Also, they are not like crazy birds..they tolerate being handled, but prefer to do their own thing lol
This hole week should be in the 80's!!! Maybe I can get some work done and weed my garden lol!
